Green Beans paruppu usili

Beans paruppu usili

Usili is one of the more popular TamBram dishes. It is generally made to go along with Vathal kuzhambu or Mor kuzhambu. I tried pairing it with garlic pepper kuzhambu, and we liked this combo too.

Ingredients: (for the Beans usili)

Thoor dal- 1/2 cup
Bengal gram dal-1/4 cup
Dried red chillies-2 ( This could be tweaked to suit your family's spice level preference)
French beans-1 cup (chopped finely)
Turmeric powder-1 tsp
salt (to taste)

For the seasoning:

Oil-2 tsps
Mustard seeds- 1 tsp
Urad dal- 1 tsp
Hing(asafoetida)-a pinch

Directions:

Soak both the dals for a minimum of 4 -5 hours with the red chillies. I generally soak them overnight to enhance the digestibility of the dals. After draining out the water, grind the dals and the red chillies to a coarse mixture.

Meanwhile, fry the beans, adding the required salt, for a couple of minutes, in a tsp of oil.

Mix the ground dal paste with the fried beans.

In a pan, add all the ingredients for seasoning Once the urad dal turns slightly reddish, add the slightly cooked beans and the ground dal paste. Keep the flame on low and cook. Stir frequently to make sure that the dal does not stick to the bottom of the pan. Once the dal and the beans are completely cooked, transfer to a serving bowl  and serve with hot steamed rice and your choice of kuzhambu.
