Homemade Hemp Milk

Ever since it came to my knowledge that the kids have the dreaded dairy sensitivity, I started looking into possible non dairy milk options. Store bought cartons of nut milks did more damage than good, mainly because of the additives and other inflammatory stuff like carrageenan that are added to enhance the flavor and the shelf life of the product.

I took it upon myself to make milk from scratch at home using only organic ingredients. This way, I was sure of what went into making of the milk.

I am sharing with all of you the recipe of Hemp milk:

Home made hemp milk:

Organic Hemp seeds- 1 cup (thoroughly washed and drained ). Hemp does not have to be soaked.
Water-4 cups

Spices for flavoring:

Cardamom seeds-1 tsp
Nutmeg powder-1/2 tsp

This  milk recipe is pretty basic and you can add in the spices of your choice to adapt it to your taste.

Preparation:

In a Vitamix blender, throw in the hemp seeds with the water. Choose the appropriate setting on your blender and blend until smooth.

Strain the milk by placing a nut milk bag over the opening of a large bottle/jug. Pour the milk through the bag. Squeeze the bag gently to get the residual milk.
The pulp could be mixed to smoothies, or added to cereal for an extra protein boost.

Now pour the milk back in the blender and add the flavorings of choice, and blend again.

Store the milk in a well sealed jar in the refrigerator, and use it within a couple of days. Since, there are no artificial additives added, the shelf life tends to be shorter than the commercial versions.

Enjoy wholesome delicious hemp milk chilled!
